It's the middle of winter, it's freezing, and there's a bit of financial doom and gloom floating around, and it's all a bit of a drag. If you're feeling like the mood is a bit low lately, you're not alone. Today I'm sharing some ways to give yourself a little boost by lifting the mood in your home - simple things that are free or low cost, and you can easily do with little effort. Follow these interior design and decoration tips below to give your spirits a lift: 1. Light a candle or use an essential oil diffuser: this really creates beautiful light in the room and a warm glow. The scent can be calming or uplifting depending what you need and it really makes you space feel welcoming and homely. I love to source natural soy wax candles from local makers and use organic essential oils.
2. Use your lamps instead of overhead lighting: at the end of the day, early afternoon or early evening, turn on your lamps - they give a sense of intimacy and a nice warm glow. It's cosy and it just feels good. In an open plan space, floor and table lamps are especially helpful in designating different zones, and creating cosy-ness in larger spaces.
3. An important self-care activity that really works is to have a tidy house. Now, I'm not perfect, but for me having a clean and tidy home makes me feel good, helps me feel calm and relaxed and like I'm ready to take on the day ( or just the next task). Don't worry, I'm not saying it's time to clean out your pantry or deep clean your bathroom! Just take a few minutes to pop that folded washing away, sort the pile of mail that's accumulated on the bench and stack the dishwasher. It's an instant pick-me-up!
4. My bedroom is my favourite space in the home - it's a room in the house it is just for me and I need it to be beautiful, calming, organised, and ready for me at the end of the day when I want to jump into bed. This is a space where you can decorate it and style it however you like, whatever lights you up. Make your bed and open your curtains everyday, clear the clutter off your bedside tables, and put away your clothes!
5. We all know being in nature is proven to lift your mood and so as often as I can I get outside. If you can't go outside because the weather is too bad or there's some other reason, I highly recommend bringing nature to you. Add some potted plants and buy yourself a bunch of flowers (just like Miley Cyrus said) and add some colour and greenery to your winter home. Snipping a few eucalyptus stems or flowers from your own garden is lovely way to bring the outdoors in, and in winter there are plentiful proteas and banksias in flower.
So there you have it - 5 tips to boost the mood in your home. Which one will you put into action today?
